    1. Kate Islay

I write and read original m m romance, after several years of writing fanfiction In a former life I studied and taught western religious history and culture, but for now my focus has been on writing and working as a freelance writer in Balti.I like power dynamics, historical settings, and nuanced characters and plots I published my first novel, In Allegiance, as an online serial it s now available in a significantly revised version I have novels and stories in the works, which I ll post about here.

    1. “His gaze drifted to Reve. Bound or not, desperate men did stupid things, but Reve remained still, his gaze fixed away. Firelight flickered over his features, turning him briefly into a prince of tales, forlorn and tragic. Mathias dunked his head under the water to clear it.”DNF at 42%In Allegiance was a beautifully written story, with a world that was woven and built in such a believable manner. However, I am pulling out the "it's not you, it's me" card for this one - there were so many asp [...]

    2. Love and honor in war.Reve is the second son of Salenne's king and a tribute of war given to Matthias, the conquering Cortesian general. Though a slave he maybe in the eyes of Cortesian law, Mathias respects the young prince. Mathias has earned his men's fealty through honor and good decisions; it isn't long before he earns Reve's as well. When do we forsake one of our oaths? Choose between them?Leal, Reve's younger brother, still impressionable is taken as a vassal, security for Salenne's good [...]

    3. Review of Version on Live Journal - 02.12.13; My review of the published version of this work is here. This book is not getting the traffic it should be. I picked this up after reading Captive Prince and in seeking something to settle my CP high I found the recommendation for it on freece’s (S. U. Pacat’s) message board. This is not Captive Prince, however, the similarities are there in plot concept and certainly in the well delivered flow of prose. In contrast, if one were to describe the a [...]

    4. Big thanks to Rachel for putting this on my radar. It does indeed deserve more traffic. Thoughtful, subtle, quiet, smart. The very few sex scenes are understated, where a touch to the face says everything.A lovely free read for when you feel introspective.

    5. Everyone in this city seemed to be conspiring against one other. I read the original version of this story on Live Journal three years ago and found it to be a solid four stars in its unedited state. In fact, second to Captive Prince, it was probably one of the best crafted original works posted on Live Journal. I think if Ms. Islay had pulled it to publish as it was, it would have done just fine. However, when she released this new version, she stated she had wanted to make some “significant [...]

    6. 4.5 HEART-POUNDING-HEARTS!! Holy mother of all things heart-pounding and nail-biting THAT was a good book. I feel a bit like this after reading it though.I’m sorry to say it but I put off reading this for ages. I think it was the cover honestly, but I absolutely devoured this book. This book is set in an alternate universe, but one very closely related to the time and period of the Roman empire. It reminded me a lot of the movie Gladiator, but without the Gladiators, just all the politics, corr [...]

    7. This was recommended to me by a co-worker who compared it to "The Captive Prince" books. I can see where that comparison arose from—"In Allegiance" has that same enslaved prince angle. However, "The Captive Prince" it is not. "In Allegiance" just does not have the sharp teeth that "The Captive Prince" has. It is, for the most part, a quiet novel. I'm not stating this as a flaw, though. I'd rather not read a carbon copy. Different spins are always preferred, and "In Allegiance" is certainly dif [...]

    8. After reading Rachel’s review I decided to bump this up my reading list… and I’m so glad I did. This online serial captures the beautifully conflicting and tentative ‘relationship’ between a Prince and his enemy captor. There was so much to like about this: I loved the two main characters and the dynamic between them, finding them equally captivating (a tough feat as there is usually one I prefer more…). I also loved the tone, the writing and the general development of the characters. [...]

    9. If I am to recommend a book from my 2016 stash, this is the one. Exceptionally well crafted, it is a pleasure to read with clever layers of politic and relationship enmeshed in this novel. The themes of duty, honour, loyalty, and friendship weave throughout and form the core motivations for main and secondary characters alike. The protagonists are Matthias, esteemed Commander of the Cortesian Army and Reve, a prince from the conquered North. Reve is gifted as a pleasure slave to Mathias by the Co [...]

    10. I thoroughly enjoyed this enemies to lovers slave fic. I loved the dynamic between Mathais and Reve, and the plot was interesting enough that I had trouble putting this one down. The gradual development of their feelings for one another, particularly on Reve's part, was well done. The writing was top notch, especially considering it's free. It's quite similar to Captive Prince in several ways, but is by no means the same book (CP has a more clever plot IMO). The HFN ending left me wanting more, [...]

    11. I can't help it. I didn't like it. I can see that the author was trying to do something specific here, and it seems it worked for many people, but I just couldn't get into this one. The writing was so clumpy - it felt like chunks of what's going on were missing; and while it could be tolerable with the world building part, with relationship part it was disastrous. I couldn't feel any chemistry between Mathias and Reve at all, in fact when it came to the sex scene, I was feeling like "huh? why?" [...]

    12. I was curious about this book because people were mentioning it with Captive Prince. And I think it would be unfair to make comparisons because they're both different stories, but I do think if you were a fan of CP or LGBT fantasy in general you will probably really enjoy this one, on its own right. For me, it was a pretty solid LGBT fantasy read. I really wanted to like it more than I did, but I just never fully got into it. I feel it had a lot of amazing potential and it just stopped short of [...]

    13. A Joyfully Jay review. 5 starsThis book captured my attention from page one and never let me go. It was an excellent, character-driven piece, about the complexities of loyalty, humanity, and the sacrifices that must be made in the midst of war. I suppose this is technically a fantasy, but it absolutely has a Roman flavor and it was easy to visualize this creation of Kate Islay’s as something close to historical. It feels alive and real and the characters, both main and secondary, exist in a wo [...]

    14. Liked it very much! Good writing, decent editing and available online. I really liked how the story developed. The secondary characters (e.g. Reve's brother) were more than simple cameos. Not a typical romance but with a handful of sexual tension. And I can also recommend a short story which I found on Kate Islay's livejournal: "Gold tithings barren" - a gem! If it comes to the mood, atmosphere and slowly budding emotions - exquisite!

    15. My search for a quality m-m romance after completing the Captive Prince trilogy wasn't easy, but thanks to a fellow reader, I found this little gem. Plotty but never overwrought, In Allegiance tells the tale of Reve, a prince who gets gifted to Mathias, the commander of the army that conquered his land. Reve's older brother is presumed dead and the youngest is in the clutches of the enemy king, whom Mathias is very loyal to. Reve will do anything to protect his little brother, while trying to ge [...]

    16. In Allegiance by Kate Islay is a wonderful story set in ancient times. Reve is a young prince given as a spoils of war slave to Mathias, a brilliant soldier and leader. Mathias is not born of royalty and wishes only to return to a peaceful life on his farm, away from the lies and deceit of court life. Mathias is a very honorable man and the treats Reve well. Mutual respect grows into affection and then into love. Reve's younger brother is taken as hostage and the men must face difficult times to [...]

    17. A really good story while I sit here waiting impatiently for "Kings Rising". The epilogue seemed rushed, though. Beautiful, promising, but then rushed. I needed a bit more. Also I kept comparing this story to "Captive Prince" and it's just not fair to any story to be compared to CP. But it did well enough. =)

    19. This book was received free in return for an honest review via the Don't Buy My Love program. As a medieval reenactor I have a love for all things historical from Rome through the Renaissance time periods. Over the last year my focus has moved to the Greeks and Romans, and this story slotted perfectly. It was an interesting tale, loosely based on the Roman society. Added in was the military aspect, another great love of mine. Whether there was truth to the places or events is unknown, the author [...]

    20. I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.Mathias is a soldier who finds himself with a new personal slave, Reve, a former prince of the recently conquered land. Mathias tries to treat him fairly, but Reve is still his slave and they must act like it. I really enjoyed their interactions, as you can tell that Mathias finds Reve so intriguing but doesn't want to show it. Reve is obviously not happy with his new situation, but needs to stay on Mathias' good side.Oddly enough, [...]

    21. This book has been given to me for free in exchange for an honest review.Mathias is the Commander for the Cortesian Army. He is given Reve, a Prince of a conquered territory, to be his slave. He accepts the gift from his King whom he's ows a great deal of loyalty. Even though Reve is now a slave he is treated well by Mathias. He is forced to punish him only whe Reve makes errors with others. Rave stays in line due to his 8 years old brother being held as a political prisoner by the King. The Kin [...]

    22. I don't know how I feel about this book :/I feel like I didn't get to know Reve at all and only learned a little bit about Mathias. I also feel like the relationship was heavily one sided. Like we got Reve's point of view and all that, but it was so hard to read his thoughts. I wished there was a short story to get to know them better and kind of see how they lived their lives as "free" men.I liked Mathias' loyalty to Arturus, and how it stayed continuous toward the book. Like even when Mathias [...]

    23. I'm giving this provisionally 3 stars. Because I'm not that swept away with it.EDIT:So it's more of a 3.5 stars read for me. And I have some bones to pick with this one.Though it definitely should be getting more traffic. It's slow-paced and subtle. But I feel like I didn't really get to know Reve. Mathias feels a little more fleshed out but not by much. I have no idea where or how they click together. The understated intimacy was awesome, the bedroom one - not so much, it felt. off? The conflict [...]

    24. It was a really engrossing empire-building thriller with the beginning of a bad slave-fic. I was so bored during the first third of the book, I almost quit it. And this is the que for my romance rant. There is a certain romance type I don't believe in. It depends more on the writing than on the tropes, though more often it happens with enemies-to-lovers trope. Other readers leave positive reviews, noting perfectly written love story. But I just don't get the characters and don't see the birth and [...]

    25. Good story, would have been 4 stars if the end had been - at least - a strong HFN. Nice plot, with lots war and politics. I found the commander a bit dull when it came to battle. I wanted to see him shine in at least one battle, instead of just being told how great he was. PS: Can help wait for Captive Prince: Volume Three.

    26. This engrossing and beautifully written online serial is finally complete. Now I need to start back from the beginning to absorb some of the details I forgot between each installment, and perhaps then I'll write a full review. In the meantime, I'll just say read this story. It's wonderful.

    27. Fortunately the plot was very engaging, because it's the only reason I kept reading, otherwise I would have stopped a few chapters in. The romance felt forced and undeveloped; the main characters lacked chemistry to the point that I wished the author hadn't included a sexual aspect to their relationship at all and just focused on them becoming friends.

    28. Not too romantic, but enjoyable. Well written, but I would have like a bit more character development and interaction between the MCs.

    29. I rate this book 3 stars. I think the main thing that prevented me from rating this book higher was the lack of actual interaction that happened between the two MCs. They were together very little throughout the book and yet we were to believe that Reve would develop feelings for Mathias. I just didn't buy it. What I did like about this book was the conflict that Mathias faced between doing what was right for his country and the loyalty he had to his king. Overall, I think it was an enjoyable re [...]
